Do you have a business or an expensive hobby?
If you just pulled a 14-hour Saturday and suddenly realized you didn’t actually make any money… you need to hear this. Being “booked out” means absolutely nothing if you can’t pay yourself a salary. I see so many of you out there creating literal magic.
But I’m going to be honest with you: most party planners have a very expensive and exhausting hobby. I’m here to change that. Let’s get to work!
The Great Revenue Delusion
Most planners fall into the “revenue trap.” You see a €1,500 payment hit your bank account and think, “Yes! I’m winning!” But by the time the party is over, that money has vanished into thin air. To stop the cycle of being overworked and underpaid, I want you to look at your most recent booking and answer these three questions honestly:
1. What did the client pay you in total?
This is your gross revenue. It looks big and shiny, but it’s not yours yet. It belongs to the business, not your wallet.
2. What did it cost you in materials and labor?
Be ruthless here. Don’t just count the flowers and the cake. Did you hire an assistant? How much did you spend on gas? Did you have to buy extra tape or zip ties? Every “small” €5 trip to the store adds up.
3. What did you actually keep?
Subtract question #2 from question #1. That last number is your profit. This is the money that has to pay your rent, your phone bill, your taxes, and—most importantly—YOU!
Why “Just Enough” Isn’t Enough
Most party planners never actually sit down to calculate these numbers. They charge what the person down the street charges, or they guess based on what feels fair. The result? You’re working 60 hours a week for a salary that wouldn’t even cover a nice dinner out. You’re exhausted, your family misses you and your bank account is still hovering near zero. You deserve better than that. Your creativity is a high-value skill. Your logistics management is a service people want to pay for. It’s time to start acting like the CEO you are.
