When you’re first starting out, your brain is usually a million miles away from things like liability and coverage. You’re probably busy obsessing over floor plans or finding that perfect shade of linen. The legal side of this business is definitely not the fun part, but it is the part that keeps you from losing sleep. Here are three reasons why having insurance actually matters for your business.
1. Venues will start asking for it
You’ll quickly find that as you start booking nicer spaces, the venue manager is going to ask for a COI (Certificate of Insurance). If you don’t have one, they might not even let you through the door to set up. It’s their way of making sure that if a backdrop tips over or a candle gets a little too close to a curtain, there’s a policy to handle the bill. Having that paperwork ready makes you look like an actual pro who knows the industry, rather than someone just “helping out” with a party.
2. It keeps the “what-ifs” away from your bank account
We all hope every event goes perfectly, but sometimes things happen that are totally out of your control. If someone trips over a cord or gets hurt at your event, you don’t want that mistake to land on your personal savings. Without insurance, you are personally on the hook for those costs. A basic policy acts as a wall between your business and your personal life, so a party mishap doesn’t turn into a financial nightmare for you.
3. It makes the money talk easier
There is a huge shift in your energy when you can tell a client, “Yes, I’m fully licensed and insured.” It feels good to say, and it takes away that tiny bit of imposter syndrome we all deal with. Clients notice that stuff. When they see you’ve handled the professional side of things, they trust you more with their budget. It makes it much easier to stand firm on your prices because you’re clearly running a legitimate business.
Let’s get the paperwork out of the way
I know the legal side of things can feel like a total maze, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. I want you to feel totally solid as you launch, so I put together a Legal & Protection Checklist for you. It’s a simple, free guide to the basics you need to stay professional.

Once you have the checklist, you might realize you need a bit more help with the paperwork. That is exactly why I created the Party Like a Boss bundle. It includes the contract templates and legal foundations I use to keep my business safe, so you can stop worrying about the “what-ifs” and get back to the creative work you love.
